I have read countless ‘self-help’ books since my teenage years, in my search to discover the source and truth of inner peace. Whilst I have collected many valuable segments from the books I’ve read, I have always been quick to continue onto the next book, feeling like there’s always something missing. With Edward's book it’s different, I feel there’s nothing missing. When I completed my first read of the book, I recall feeling a sense of great relief, like I had finally found the ultimate reference… no more searching. Edward provides the true instructions for life, and so wonderfully written, in a down to earth and comprehensible style. What a gift this book is.

I’ve read many books on my journey of personal development throughout my life from the sciences, physics, metaphysics, both Western and Eastern philosophy to various branches of psychology. Some have left a lasting impression and in time, most have been forgotten.
That was until I picked up Edward’s book, ‘Waking Up in the World’. As soon as you hold the booking in your hands you know you will be reading a book of authority on the subject. The first impression is one of substance, creativity and meticulous attention to detail. Every page speaks from deep wisdom as well as a sincerity that comes from the heart and personal experience.
This is not a book merely to be read but instead, it is a reference book for living. With every reading you spiral to a deeper level of knowledge, insight and understanding missed during the previous readings. This book is a must for anyone that is serious about their journey of personal development and spiritual growth.

Ed’s book offers the most concise, thorough, and simply explained exploration of mindfulness and meditation I have ever read.
He skillfully weaves together ten guiding spiritual principles, supported by beautiful illustrations and photographs that make the reading experience even more engaging and enjoyable.
I was deeply impressed by Ed’s understanding of how humanity has arrived at its current challenges, and even more so by his thoughtful, heartfelt proposals for how we can live sustainably and harmoniously on our planet together.
This book is not only an insightful read, but clearly comes straight from Ed’s heart. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I appreciate Edward’s honesty about his life story, his own “waking up in the world” where he recognised he was a peaceful, silent, aware presence, rather than a person striving for spiritual attainment in the future, and making a “waking path” accessible for everyone through clear explanations, recommendations for daily practices, supported by audio material on The Tree website.
I have been to “The Tree”, the retreat that Edward runs with his wife, Clare, four times since 2019. I value the consistency, accessibility, intelligence, and kindness of Edward’s teachings and that he continues to reflect the values he teaches in his own life.
In this book, Edward outlines the ten principles of the waking path, which are less about “doing that distracts” and more about being. These principles allow us to acknowledge, with kindness and compassion, patterns of behaviour that may not be serving us well and instil daily practices that move us towards health in its broadest context over our lifespan. It may well be that some of the popular health advice is incorporated, but only after listening to our bodies and being wise about how we make “aware” decisions.
I appreciate the blend of Eastern mysticism and Western psychology, which illustrates complex points through diagrams and stories. I appreciated the guidance on how we can learn in relationships with others, such as psychotherapists, healers, and practice communities; how we can assess our unique progress; and how to use humour to address our humanness as fallible beings. I also appreciated that Edward addressed some thorny issues, such as why some healing techniques may not work and the law of karma.
I’d recommend this book to anyone wanting to live in an increasingly integrated and loving manner with themselves and those they are in community with. Each of us is enough as we are, and the book can meet everyone where they are. I read it from cover to cover, but you could dip in and out and read it a chapter at a time, whilst trying some of the suggested practices.

Waking Up in the World by Edward Harpin is a powerful and deeply personal account of one man's search for tranquility and meaning. Emerging from a troubled youth, Edward charts his spiritual awakening with clarity and compassion, drawing the reader into his journey in a way that is both hypnotic and healing.
This beautifully produced book is much more than a memoir—it is a practical and inspiring guide. Through a rich blend of life experiences and spiritual exploration, Edward introduces ten guiding principles: psyche, meditation, intention, physical body, subtle body, compassion, healing, relationships, planet earth, and daily practice. These serve as a holistic toolkit for anyone seeking a life that feels balanced, connected, and alive.
The pages are filled with evocative photographs, insightful worksheets, and grounded practices. The language throughout is clear, authentic, and deeply nurturing. Compassion flows from every chapter, making this a book that not only opens the mind but also softens the heart.
It is a volume to be treasured—one that offers hope, depth, a sense of purpose and calm. Whether read cover to cover or dipped into for wisdom in a quiet moment, Waking Up in the World is a companion for the soul's journey. I deeply treasure my copy.
